Notice to teachers, parents and students:

The Audubon Society of Omaha is sponsoring its annual student art contest. It will be similar to previous year's contests in many ways. This web site will be your main source for contest information.

This web site currently has all the contest information, including entry forms, which must be printed from the web site. All submitted student artwork will be exhibited.

Contest winners will be posted on this web site after March 15, 2010

ENTRY INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS K-FOURTH GRADE.

There will be a separate judging and prizes awarded for each grade level. Each of these grade levels will have three top awards of excellence in three categories: an Award of Excellence for realistic rendering, an Award of Excellence for graphic design, and an Award for cartooning. There will also be a limited number of Awards of Merit for each grade level. That number will be determined by the judges based on the number of exceptional pieces submitted.

First Category: Realistic Art

True to life art in the tradition of the American wildlife artists. The bird is easy to identify with accurate coloring and markings. The student must do a freehand drawing. No obvious tracings or stencils or computer drawn works will be considered for an award.

Any medium. Colored pencil, ink, marker, watercolor, tempera paint, pastels, etc.

Art must be in color, unless the bird's actual coloring is black and/or white.

Second Category: Graphic Design

Emphasis on color and design rather than realism, yet retaining bird identification. For example, bird(s) must still be identifiable as a Cardinal or Blue Jay.

Any medium or combination of media: Colored pencil, ink, marker, watercolor, tempera paint, pastels, colored or textured paper, fabric, etc.

Third Category: Cartooning

Any style cartoon drawing with some indication of the kind of bird portrayed, indicated by bird shape and some identifiable markings. Art may be a one-panel cartoon or a story cartoon of several panels. With or without captions.

Awards:

All  Excellence  and  Merit  Award winners will be honored at a special awards ceremony at Bellevue University on Saturday,  April 10 at 2:00 pm. Each winner will receive a ribbon and a special prize,  to be presented at the awards ceremony.  Artwork of all student participants will be on exhibit this day starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 4:00 pm.

There will be a separate judging and prizes awarded for each grade level for fifth through eighth grade through high school. Each level will have a maximum of three Award categories –awards for Realistic Rendering,  Graphic Design, and Cartooning. **General Requirements for All Entries:**

All art should be two-dimensional only, and may be as small as 8 1/2 x 11" or as large as 11x14." Please mount art on either white or black paper or cardboard. The mounting paper should provide a 2-to 4-inch margin top and sides and a 4-to-6-inch margin on the bottom.

NOTE: Entry forms should be mounted securely on the FRONT of the art work, centered underneath the art work, on the 4-to-6 -inch margin of the mounting paper. Adults may choose to print out the entry forms for younger students, as these entry forms will be the only student identification on the artwork .

Teachers:

Please try to limit entries to 4-6 per classroom, per category. We will accept a slightly larger number, but we are not staffed to handle large volumes of art from a single classroom. Teachers: please do not submit a whole classroom of art without making any pre-selection.

Student art does not need school sponsorship. All students of Nebraska or Iowa are welcome to enter this contest independently and submit their art directly to the Audubon Society. Home schooled students are welcome to enter this contest.

All work must be delivered directly to the Audubon Society of Omaha Office , the Center Mall, 42^nd & Center, lower level on Friday, March 5 - 4pm to 6pm, or Saturday, March 6 -10 am to 3pm. 

  Audubon Student Art Exhibit and Awards Show at Bellevue University:

Award winning art work from this competition will be part of a public art exhibit at the Gordon Lozier Center on the Bellevue University Campus. (Please see map of the campus elsewhere on this website.) The exhibit will open at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 10, and end at  4:00pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The works of all student entrants will be on exhibit.

The awards show will be held Saturday, April 10 at 2pm, and will last approximately one hour.  Live raptors will be present . All Award of Excellence winners and Award of Merit winners are asked to be present to receive their awards. Kindergartners will be honored first and high school students last. All will have their names read and be  called to receive their award ribbon and prize . Please check our web site after March 15 for the list of winners. No written confirmation will be sent out to teachers or schools. Teachers, parents and students must check the web site for winners/judging results.

Return of Student Art Work:

All student art work in the exhibit must be picked up by the student or teacher after the Awards ceremony on April 10.

Unfortunately, we cannot store any art work beyond that date, unless parents and/or teachers call and make special arrangements for pickup.

The Audubon Society values every student's art work, and we take great care with each piece. However, we cannot assume any responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, submitted art.

This contest is organized by volunteers who are members of the Audubon Society of Omaha. Our purpose in sponsoring this contest is to provide an artistic and educational opportunity to all interested students in the area. If you are excited about this contest and would like to see it continue next year, please call us now and volunteer to help. There are many volunteer opportunities that require only a 2-3 hour commitment per year.
