Last year I put up 4 Peterson style birdhouses at our new house in Wilton, Maine. I had tree swallows nest in two of them. This year I built 2 more and placed them much closer to our house for better viewing. My wife saw a pair of bluebirds on April 16, 2002 flying in and out of both houses. They selected one. We have been seeing them off and on whenever we are home. Today May 3, I checked and there is a nest with one egg in it. I also built 2 additional Peterson houses for friends of ours who live in Cornville, Maine. The week after we put them up a pair of bluebirds arrived and are nesting as well. Jim and Lisa Bailey Wilton, Maine

Eastern Bluebird March 22, 10:00 AM. After remaining with us all winter again, Fred and Ethel (whose second nesting last year was chronicled in "The Bluebird Monitor's Guide" ) have presented their first egg of the season this morning. Temps are in the 20's with night time lows expected to be in the teens. The nest was complete 3/17/02. All previous young were chased away 2 weeks ago, but have been allowed back in to eat during the bad weather., Malinda Mastako, SE Michigan

Chickadee (sp) First Black Capped Chickadee egg in NABS nestbox in my front yard on 5/2/02.  The adults carried in bright green moss for a day, then gathered milti-colored fluff from a quilt in my neighbor's open garage.  After that they shredded the fibers from a roll of burlap in my garage and topped it off with a layer of soft fur.  It is a very interesting nest to say the least!  I added a hole reducer immediately due to  many pairs of TRES vying for boxes, and they did not abandon as I was  afraid they would if the reducer was put on before egg laying began.  Hoping for success in my first ever BCCH nest! Malinda Mastako, SE Michigan  30 miles west of Detroit
Nuthatch (sp)
Tree Swallow First TRES egg found on 5-8-02 in standard NABS box in my front yard. The weather has been cool and they have delayed egg laying for quite a while. There are two other TRES nests waiting for eggs. They are being friendly neighbors now with the Black Capped Chickadees across the yard, and bluebirds in the back.  Malinda Mastako SE Michigan 30 miles west of Detroit.

3/23/02 Just finished checking my trail. I adopted some boxes that were not monitored that the TWRA had placed two - three years ago. They gave me permission to monitor them. On 3-15, I cleaned them out and repaired a few. Upon checking them I found that eight days later I have a nest with three eggs! It was near 20 degrees last night, too. Carol Williams, Smithville, TN

The idea for these maps originated on the mailing list Bluebird-L, more information can be obtained at: http://www.cit.cornell.edu/cit-pubs/email/using-lists/index.html

The original map files are used with permission from Lanny Chambers from his humming bird web site at: http://www.hummingbirds.net/

Here are the rules (remember I can change them):

  1. The date/time of the email, phone call, postmark (for snail mail) will serve as the date/time of record, unless you specify another date (so be honest and play fair). I know to some this may not seem fair but it takes the burden off of me and puts it on you. Only one sighting per state will be accepted. In case of ties (two sightings from the same state, same species, for the same date, for the same time) the date and time of the email will be the tie breaker (earliest wins).
  2. To save us both some time please check the map before sending.
  3. I will record all three species of bluebirds, chickadees, tree swallows, and nuthatches, wrens, etc. In other words any native species.
  4. I will include a text line with your record of up to eighty characters. Included in this can be any or all of the following: actual date (if different from the one of record), your name, city, trail location, email address, nest box type, etc., In fact just about anything you want to include. You must define this in the email, phone call, snail mail.
  5. The lines of text will be below the map in alphabetical order (by state/province). Most important is the nest be complete with at least one egg laid.
  6. The rules will change as I see fit.
  7. Notice this mapping is not limited to those who subscribe to Bluebird-L. It is open to all who monitor nestboxes in the US and Canada.
  8. Anyone can submit a nesting. In other words no restrictions that the person must be subscribed to one of the lists.
  9. You can submit a nesting by email, phone, snail mail. You can even submit a nesting for someone else.
  10. The last rule is this is my game, so I can change the rules if I see a need. Don't worry I don't change my rules very easily.
