Drill 3 3/8 " air holes near top on the sides.
I drill a hole on each side and in the front for a nail to keep front
closed.
Remember to make toe scratches for swallows to get out if you have
them.
So how do you get 8" and 10" out of a 1 x 6 ? You rip off
one cell or 2" from a 1 x 6 and two cell or 4" off for the
top. The top is attached by inserting a wood block into a cell and
screw it in place and then using a deck screws attach the top to the
sides.
I had other questions too.
- The boxes should be warm in cold temps. as the cell seem to
insulate the inside from both hot and cold.
- This flat material that is about 1" thick with ribs every
2" and is open on both ends.
- They do make round PVC pipe but this is easier to work with, clean
out and monitor.
- This design is like NABS style nesting boxes.
- I would love to send a box to Ellis Bird Farm.
You do need a table saw to make these boxes and PVC pipe glue and
cleaner. I also make jigs to hold the parts while the glue sets up about
15 to 20 minutes at room temp. This makes the process much faster and
you get a box that is align correctly. The other thing I found out is
that if you rough up the joints the glue holds better, sand paper wire
brush, etc..
I think that the picture will make all the directions
understandable.
