DOUBLE (ECHO) ROOF/SIDE FOR NABS-STYLE BOX

By Bruce Burdett and Fawzi P. Emad

Using 3/4" wood make six 1 by 1 by 3/4 spacers "A". Drill 1/4 inch holes in each of these spacers as shown. Attach second roof over three spacers using screws which equal the thickness of one spacer plus the two roofs. See top figure below.

In a similar fashion attach a second side on the side that DOES NOT OPEN as shown in the lower figure below. Again use three spacers "A" and screws. Note that each of the six screws do not go to the inside of the nestbox. Box must be mounted so that non-opening side faces West.

It is best to use 1/2 inch CDX plywood for the "second" roof and side. A full 4 by 8 ft sheet costs under $10. When cutting sides, cut a single rectangular piece into two sides, this way there is no wasted wood. The exact size of the "second" roof and side depend on the size of the nestbox being covered. Most other boxes (such as the Peterson, Gilwood, etc.) can be covered in a similar way making sure not to cover any vents.
