April Bird Calendar for the Omaha Nebraska area

Following is a partial list of birds that migrate through our area and approximate times to see them. Arrival times can be affected by weather patterns.

 

Species

Location

Common Loons, Horned and Eared Grebes,
Red-necked Grebe - rare; has been seen at Lake Manawa
All month - Omaha dam sites, & Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs
American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant All month - Omaha Dam Sites and Lake Manawa
Waterfowl Most species may be present during the month.
Raptors: Osprey, Turkey Vulture, Broad-winged Hawk, Swainson's Hawks (lg #s about the 15th), Peregrine Falcon. All month on days with good flying conditions at lookouts such as Neale Woods Nature Center, & Waubonsie State Park in southwest Iowa.
Rails: Late - Sora  
Shorebirds: Mid Piping Plover, Lesser Golden Plover, Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, Willet, Hudsonian & Marbled Godwits, Semi-palmated Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Phalarope; Late - Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Upland Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper Jack Sinn Wildlife Area, north Lancaster County, and the Rainwater Basins are the most consistent areas to see shorebirds. If we get spring rains, look in flooded fields.
Amer. Woodcocks - continue display flights all month southeast corner, Lake Manawa at dawn & dusk.
Gulls: Early - Bonaparte's Gull Mid - Franklin's Gull  
Terns: Mid - Forster's Tern  
Greater Prairie Chicken booming peaks around mid-April Burchard Lake Special Use Area, Pawnee County - two blinds for public use. Contact Nebr. Game & Parks
Flycatchers: Late - Eastern Kingbird  
Swallows: Early - Purple Martin, Tree Swallow,   Mid - Barn Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow    Late - Bank Swallow  
Wrens: Mid-late - House Wren, Winter Wren - leaves by end of the month  
Kinglets: All month - Ruby-crowned Kinglet  
Gnatcatchers: Late - Blue-gray Gnatcatcher  
Thrushes: Early - Hermit Thrush  
Brown Thrasher: Mid - late  
Warblers: Mid - Yellow-rumped, Yellow-throated Fontenelle Forest in Sycamore trees
Warblers: Mid - Louisiana Waterthrush streams in Fontenelle Forest, Schramm & Platte River St. Park
Warblers: Late - Orange-crowned, Northern Parula, Black and White, Prothonotary  
Sparrows: Early - Chipping, Field, Savannah, Fox (leaves by middle of month),   Mid - Vesper, Lark, Grasshopper,   Late - Clay-colored, Lincoln's, White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow  
Longspurs: Around April 15th - Smith's Longspur, Chestnut-collared Longspur Find in short grass areas (Omaha dam sites) during or after snow storms. Both are rare, but migrate regularly through our area.
