
ASO Prairie Preserve
The Audubon Society of Omaha Prairie Preserve (formerly known as the Jensen
Prarie) is a 13 acre eastern tall grass
prairie preserve. The south half the preserve is virgin prairie (never
plowed) and the north half is old farm field. The north half is being
replanted using seeds harvested form the virgin prairie south half and prairie
seed collected from other local prairies.
The preserve is available as a research study site for all students and
scientist. To visit the site located at 6720 Bennington Street near 72nd and
McKinley contact the ASO office 445 4138.
The prairie has over 80
species of forbs (flowers) and grasses. Several mammals such as badgers, fox,
rabbits, and gophers. It is also the home for neo tropical grassland birds such
as Bobolinks.
Anyone interested in assisting with the restoration and management of the
prairie please contact Glenn Pollock at 402 571 6230. A wide variety of
task are needed from assisting with controlled burns to record keeping.
The prairie was purchased with a grant from The Nebraska Environmental Trust
and management assistance grants from The Iowa West Foundation, National Fish
and Wildlife Foundation , The Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District
and many generous donations from members of Omaha Audubon Society.
