Field trip: Tour UNO Audubon Chapter’s Indigenous Garden followed by bird watching at Elmwood Park

Saturday, September 10, 2022
7:30 am9:00 am

Check out the UNO Indigenous Garden on Saturday, September 10, from 7:30-8 a.m., and stay with us for an hour of bird watching in Elmwood Park. Designed in the shape of a traditional Native American medicine wheel, UNO's Indigenous Garden features four segments, representing each point of the compass and reflecting the color scheme of a Lakota wheel — as Caroline Fiscus recommended. Each section highlights one sacred plant corresponding to a particular compass direction — Lavender, Cedar, Sage, and Sweetgrass. The rest of the garden displays an array of wildflowers and other medicinal plants. Strategically placed bird feeders, including a hummingbird feeder, and suet squares attract birds we can observe. In addition, Kyle Finley, one of the garden’s founders, will offer an overview of its history and plantings.
